Double award win for SmartLiving at the Volunteer Awards

Published on June 10 2011

SmartLiving Falkirk was successful in two categories at the 12th Annual Volunteer Awards, run by the Volunteer Centre Falkirk, on 8 June.

The SmartLiving project won the award for “Youth Volunteering Engaging Organisation of the Year” for the fourth time and Laura Frew, one of the SmartLiving volunteers, won the award for “Young volunteer of the Year”.

The Volunteer Awards recognise and acknowledge volunteering activity in the Falkirk Council area.

SmartLiving is run by LinkLiving (part of the Link group) and is backed by funding from the Scottish Government’s Wider Role Fund, Falkirk Council, The Robertson Trust as well as the Link Group.

SmartLiving recruits young people aged 16 to 25 from across the Falkirk area and trains them to become Peer Educators who can deliver the message of how difficult maintaining a tenancy can be. These volunteers are young people who have themselves lived through the experience of living on their own and give up their time to deliver sessions to other youngsters right across Falkirk. These sessions can cover anything from teaching young people how to prepare for living on their own to generally raising the issue of homelessness among young people.

Elaine Johnston, LinkLiving Director, said: “We are delighted that SmartLiving has been recognised for the fourth time in these awards – it is a great tribute to the contribution of all the volunteers and staff and particular congratulations to Laura for being the Volunteer of the year”
