Right to Buy

Many tenants of local authorities or housing associations have the right to purchase their homes from their landlord at a discounted price. This is a complex area and your right to purchase your home may depend on many factors, including:

  • The date your tenancy began
  • The landlord's rules (whether it has charitable status)
  • The type of property - grouped housing for people with special need or houses for people of pensionable age are exempt
  • How much has been spent on improvement and repair in recent years
  • Whether the tenancy transferred from another landlord
  • The conduct of the the tenancy
  • Whether the landlord wishes to demolish the property

Do I qualify for Right to Buy?

Link tenants who qualify for the Right to Buy are:

  • Those whose tenancy began before 2 Janaury 1989
  • Those who became Link tenants as a result of a transfer of ownership of their home from a local authority or Scottish Homes (Scottish Special Housing Association)

Link tenants who do not have the Right to Buy are those whose tenancies began on or after 2 Janaury 1989.

The information on this page gives only an overview of Right to Buy and should not be regarded as comprehensive and definitive.
