Transcript: Change of circumstances

This chapter will let you know what to do if your circumstances change. From time to time you may need a little bit more support to help you with your tenancy. If you feel things are getting on top of you, please contact us for advice. There are a number of organisations that can help.

It's important to tell us if your contact details change - for example mobile numbers - as we may need to get hold of you. Please remember, if you want to change who lives with you or you plan to leave the property for four weeks or more, get in touch and let us know.

You can apply to let your home, take in a lodger or give your tenancy to someone else, but you must contact us to get our written agreement first. You cannot go ahead without this. We have one month to let you know if we agree. You must not leave your home without letting us know. This is known as abandoning your tenancy, and you may have to meet all the costs for us to bring your tenancy to an end.

We can consider tenants for a transfer from one home to another or to exchange properties. However, properties will need to be checked first and we would need to agree to the move. If you want more information please contact us.

We will have told you if you have the right to buy your home. If you want more information please speak to us.

We understand that life can be difficult at times, but we're always happy to speak to you or your family. This can happen if a tenant dies or you split from your partner. In these circumstances we can give you advice about who can take over the tenancy. We can put you in touch with people who can offer help and advice, and we'll make sure we work it out together.

If you want to end your tenancy you must give us 28 days' notice. If you are a joint tenant, you must make sure it is signed by both of you. We will check your home before you leave and we'll let you know if there are any repairs you need to sort out before you go. You must leave your home in good condition. We will charge you if there is any work you should have done before you left.
