Our Advice Team can give you free and confidential advice about money and benefits.

 About the advice team

Last year, the team helped more than 1500 people to claim benefit income totalling £565,000 and helped them deal with £440,000 of debt.

Welfare rights services

We can give you help and advice on all aspects of social security benefits and tax credits. We will help you to:

  • Ensure you are receiving all the benefits and tax credits to which you are entitled
  • Fill in claim forms for benefits and tax credits
  • Check that benefit and tax credit awards are correct
  • Help and represent you in challenging, disputing and appealing incorrect benefit and tax credit decisions
  • Speak with benefit and tax credit authorities to make sure you are getting the correct information
  • Deal with issues with your gas, electricity or telephone provider
  • Deal with any health issues you may have
  • Deal with any other matters that affect your welfare

Money and debt advice

We are here to give help and advice on managing your money and dealing with debts. We will help you to:

  • Prepare and manage a household budget
  • Access a bank account or other suitable financial products
  • Deal with your debts including rent and council tax arrears
  • Deal with creditors
  • Apply for sequestration, a trust deed or set up any other repayment arrangement
  • Deal with court proceedings regarding your debt

Services for older people

We have a team dedicated to helping older people. Our advisors have expert knowledge of dealing with the needs and issues of tenants aged 60 and over. To date, the team has made 1250 home visits and secured more than £2 million of additional benefit income.

We can visit you at home if you wish, or speak with you by phone. We will help you to:

  • Make sure you are receiving all of the benefits to which you are entitled
  • Complete benefit claim forms
  • Check that benefit awards are correct
  • Help and represent you in challenging, disputing and appealing incorrect benefit decisions
  • Deal with issues with your gas, electricity and telephone provider
  • Deal with any health issues you may have by looking at possible aids, adaptations and financial assistance
  • Deal with any other matters that affect your welfare
