Are you Winter Ready?

Get ready for winter with our top tips for dealing with condensation

Condensation is common in winter. It happens when warm air hits cold surfaces like windows. This can cause damp patches or black spots (called condensation mould). Follow these easy tips to help manage it in your home:

1. Let air flow through your home

Good ventilation helps stop condensation. Here’s what you can do:

  • Try opening windows a little after cooking, bathing, or showering to let warm, moist air escape.
  • Bathroom and kitchen fans don’t cost much to run and make a big difference.
  • If your windows have small trickle vents, keep them open for fresh air.

2. Cut down on moisture

  • If you dry clothes indoors, using a clothes rack in a room with a window open.
  • Using lids to cover pots when cooking stops steam from escaping.
  • Don’t overcrowd rooms: too much furniture traps moisture.

3. Keep your home warm

  • Heat your home often: it’s better to heat for short times throughout the day than to let it get very cold.
