Renting for older people

We are committed to helping older people live independent lives.

Our Older Persons’ Service offers a range of housing options designed to meet the needs of older people.

Retirement housing

Retirement housing offers purpose-built accommodation for older people who do not need the services of on-site staff or an emergency call system.

Retirement housing tenants have access to a visiting housing officer.

These developments benefit from lift access, scooter stores and a communal lounge.

Retirement Plus

Retirement Plus housing provides an enhanced tenancy management service and is delivered by part-time retirement housing officers who work Monday to Friday.

It is an option for people who are independent, but also need an added sense of security.

The properties benefit from an emergency call system monitored by a specialised call centre, which responds to calls when there are no staff on site (evenings and weekends).

Facilities include lifts, communal laundries and lounges and guest bedrooms (tenants can book these for a small charge). Facilities vary depending on the development.

Unfortunately given the age and design of these properties, the majority are unsuitable for electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing provides a housing support service which is funded by the local authority.

It is for people who need additional support to maintain their independence. Sheltered housing officers work Monday to Friday from either 9am to 5pm or 8.30am to 4.30pm depending on the development.

The service is registered with the Care Inspectorate as a Housing Support Provider. Housing support is help that enables someone to manage on a day-to-day basis while they are living in their own home. You can find our latest inspection report here.

Tenants receiving this service will have an individual support plan which will be reviewed on a regular basis:

It can include tasks such as:

  • providing, maintaining and responding to emergency alarm systems. This includes morning calls. The emergency call system is monitored by a specialist call centre who will respond at evenings and weekends and when there is no staff on site.
  • supporting new tenants to settle into their homes
  • encouraging tenants to participate in social activities within our communal lounges and in the local community

Facilities include lifts, communal laundries and lounges and guest bedrooms (bookable for a small charge). Facilities vary depending on the development.

Unfortunately given the age and design of these properties, the majority are unsuitable for electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Our sheltered housing does not replace any current or future need a tenant may have for 'care' services such as home-help, bathing assistance or help given by a district nurse or other medical practitioners.

We are unable to provide personal care or practical support in your home. We are also unable to administer, store or keep medication.
