Bearsden residents secure bike storage and cycling support

Residents of Allander Road in Bearsden are benefitting from new secure bike storage, making cycling more accessible while keeping communal spaces clutter-free.

For many people, the lack of safe bike storage is a major barrier to cycling. According to Cycling Scotland, a third of households – impacting 1.5 million people – lack secure places to store their bikes.

To address this issue, Link Group, one of Scotland’s largest housing and community organisations, installed four dedicated bike storage units at its Bearsden development.

Throughout the project, residents were consulted, ensuring that the storage was properly informed by their needs and wishes.

The result is a safer and more accessible storage solution that has been welcomed by the community.

Sarah Smith, Group Director of Communities, Link Group, said: "For many residents, cycling is a fantastic way to stay active and get around, but without safe storage, it simply wasn’t an option for them.

“Now, with these new storage units, residents have told us they feel more confident about owning and using a bike.

“It’s making a real difference to everyday life – helping families get outdoors, promoting sustainable travel, and improving well-being.

"We’re also grateful for the generous funding from regional transport partnership Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) through Cycling Scotland, which has made this possible. We hope this initiative encourages even more residents to take up cycling and enjoy the benefits of a healthier, more connected community."

To celebrate the project’s completion, we hosted a 'Dr Bike' session in partnership with the charity Bike for Good. Residents received free bike checks and minor repairs, ensuring their bicycles are in top condition and ready to use.
