New national research reveals how Link services improve lives

Over the past three years, Link Group has been part of a major research project looking into something we already know is important: the real, human impact of social housing on people's lives

Led by Shelter Scotland and delivered by HACT, the study brought together several Scottish social landlords, including Link and Link group partner Horizon.

Link’s part in the project involved gathering feedback from around 50 tenants who moved into new homes in three of our developments: Millarston in Paisley, Mellor Place in Motherwell and McNeill Place in Blantyre.

Our housing teams collected stories, insights and experiences to help paint a picture of how people’s lives have changed since getting the keys to their new homes.

And the results?

Even during the tough winters of 2022–2024, with rising costs and soaring energy bills, tenants told us they felt more financially comfortable, safer, and more connected to their communities.

Many mentioned how being able to heat their homes, access green spaces, and live without constant worry made a real difference to their wellbeing.

Here’s what some of our tenants had to say:

  • “I was housebound after a stroke – our old home made life so difficult. Now things are much easier for me and my husband.”

  • “I felt like a prisoner in my old neighbourhood. Now I feel safe going outside again.”

  • “I was living in a caravan and totally isolated. This has changed everything.”

  • “I never thought I’d get a new build. I don’t know where I’d be otherwise.”

These are just a few examples of how much a safe, secure and good-quality home can transform lives.

The full report is now available here.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in gathering the data and supporting tenants to share their experiences - your work is helping shape future housing policy and support in Scotland.
